"Les ombres rouges" - Albert Victorin Breau

Roman Les ombres rouges, page couverture

Joseph “Red” Murphy is the product of a mix marriage. An Irish Canadian father and a Mohawk mother. It’s with great fear of the future and immense sadness that Joseph and his mother are forced to leave Kanawake, an Indian reserve on the south shore of Montréal. Tear with the idea of never seeing his grandparents again, this four years old boy finds himself in this giant city, Montreal, rejected by the whites.

Violence becomes integrated in his every day life. Rose, his mother, slides little by little down into the world of drugs, while her son, with his fist, makes his mark in the street gangs, and forging himself a solid reputation with the representative of the law.

After 10 years exile, he return to the reserve, to find his Indian heritage and discover that his origins are not sufficient to be accepted by his own people. The kindness of his grandparents and the love of Fawn, a young Mohawk girl who has shared his youth, was not enough to calm the hurt and pain that beat in his heart.

We’ll follow him in his discovery of love, prostitution and his climb (montée) in the world of boxing, right up to the world championship. What traces will leave on his life, Nancy, the aristocrat, cultivated young woman, who from her tender lips pronounce too often this disagreeable word, for the ears of a street wise kid, culture. As far Irving Shuster, Nancy’s uncle, a celebrated artist, what role will he play in Red’s life? Between boxing and art, is there such a big difference?
